  • LEARN ON YOUR SCHEDULE.

As the largest school district in Genesee County, Grand Blanc Community Schools has developed a robust structure to support a virtual environment for students K-12 - Bobcat Virtual Learning.

If you have a child who benefits from learning at home or needs a flexible daily schedule, Bobcat Virtual Learning will provide online courses and a supportive online community. Certified Grand Blanc teachers will be available to your student while they receive high-quality content and instruction.

Introducing Bobcat Virtual...

  • What is Bobcat Virtual?

    Posted by:

Bobcat Virtual is an online education program established for families with students in grades K-12 looking for a robust, fully virtual option. Bobcat Virtual is an exclusively online teaching and learning experience.

Bobcat Virtual Learning courses use curriculum from Lincoln Learning (K-5), EDynamic (6-8 electives), and Apex Learning (6-12 core course and 9-12 electives) or curriculum that was developed by Grand Blanc Community Schools. These classes are facilitated by a GBCS teacher and follow GBCS grading policies. Teachers are often available for face-to-face/Google Meet interactions and are employed by Grand Blanc Community Schools. These courses are housed in Canvas and should all be available in one location.

If a course is not available through our BVL curriculum, students may choose courses that are provided through an outside vendor. These use a variety of different curriculums and are acquired through the Genesee ISD GenNet Portal. They use Michigan certified teachers, but they are not directly employed by Grand Blanc Community Schools. We do not oversee them, and they may not follow the same grading policies and expectations of other GBCS schools. In addition, they may not observe the same breaks that our students have. This means that students will need to pay attention to deadlines and possibly work ahead. These courses are not housed in Canvas, which means students will have to log in to different systems to access them.

Bobcat Virtual Learning was conceived of in the 2018 Strategic Plan and was not exclusively a product of the pandemic. Planning for this program had already begun and was instituted much more quickly than planned due to the COVID-19 circumstances. That being said, we have continually made adjustments to improve and learned lessons that we will take forward into the new school year.

We welcome District of Choice students and invite you to apply to GBCS by July 31, 2021. Acceptance through D.O.C. is necessary if you are a student living outside the boundaries of the district. Click here to apply for District of Choice for the 2021-22 school year asap!

  • What sets Bobcat Virtual apart from other programs?

    Posted by:

In most cases, classes are facilitated by our amazing Grand Blanc Community Schools certified teachers and staff. The classes are fully endorsed, accredited, and supported by our district. Students will earn regular school credit from Grand Blanc and will earn Grand Blanc High School diplomas. In other words, students will be Bobcats! If they choose to, they may participate in extracurriculars, including athletics! Most High school honors and AP courses are available, as well.

  • What commitment is involved?

    Posted by:

Students and families will make a minimum of a one-semester commitment to Bobcat Virtual in order to maintain the best overall learning experience. Elementary students (K-5) will need a parent/guardian “learning coach” at home to provide valuable guidance in partnership with the program. The teachers, as well as the design of Lincoln Learning, will assist and guide the learning coach. This partnership is essential for success.

For students K-5, teachers will virtually meet with students as needed (and at least weekly). Secondary teachers will provide office hours of one-on-one meetings, if necessary. Teachers will not be teaching "live" as a general rule. The vast majority of work will be done independently and online.

Students will be required to "attend" courses daily (login on a daily basis) in order to stay on track; however, flexibility is one of the benefits of the program. Deadlines will be given to keep students on pace, but the time of day/day of the week a student completes work is mostly up to your family (unless otherwise specified by your instructor.)

Secondary students will need to be accountable and responsible with their assignments and should be self-motivated to complete tasks or have some guidance from an adult.

The same holidays are generally allowed for virtual students that are on the GBCS District Calendar, as well as the same beginning and end dates of quarters, semesters, and the school year. If you don't feel assignments have been adjusted to accommodate, please speak with your student's teacher.

  • Does my child have to do school work at a certain time?

    Posted by:

Students expected to log in daily and are required to complete their work according to the pacing guide provided by their teacher. Working at a steady pace will allow on-time completion of courses, but a student’s daily schedule is up to the student and parent/guardian.

  • Can my student participate in after-school activities as an online student?

    Posted by:

Yes! Your student is a Grand Blanc Bobcat and can try out for/participate in extracurriculars, clubs, and sports, as they are available. Please see the building websites to stay up-to-date on what is available, when tryouts are taking place, etc. Transportation would not be available to or from activities, however.
