Strategy II: Character & Culture of the 2018-2023 Strategic Plan States:
We will create a positive school environment where the well-being of every student is valued and supported.
Our method is to do this through:
- the intentional and comprehensive implementation of the Positivity Project at all levels
- the thoughtful and complete use of Restorative Justice and Restorative Practices in our classrooms and buildings
- the intentional and supported identification and use of culturally responsive teaching methods
Character is an intrinsic force that drives us to make thoughtful, positive choices in order to make our community a better place. This means doing the right thing even if it is not easy or when no one is looking.
At Grand Blanc Schools, a Positivity Project partner school, we teach character through the lens of positive psychology. Students will learn to identify the 24 character strengths within themselves and others and will talk about the principle that other people matter through both scheduled lessons with Positivity Project resources and service-learning activities with their classmates and teachers revolving around those character strengths.
According to the Student Rights & Responsibilities Handbook:
Students have the "responsibility to respect the inherent human dignity, worth and rights of every other individual", "express his or her opinions and ideas in a respectful manner so as not to offend or slander others", and "become actively involved in one's education, understanding of others and preparation for adult life."
